D&RGW Days Gone By

The railroad has a fascinating history, and the section of track in South Fork, Colorado is no exception. This is a D&RGW water tower that was used in the logging industry back in the day hosts the Grande’s old Creede Branch that originally was built as a narrow gauge in 1881, converted to standard gauge by 1902.

The line from South Fork to Creede has been essentially idle since 1985, and was put up for abandonment in 1999. The D&RG Historical Foundation headed by Don Shank purchased this segment, with the eventual intent to restore it for tourist service, but that hasn’t yet happened. Nope, for now it stands silent in all its glory overlooking this sleepy little mountain town.
